Overview  
The Adaptec 5400S has been designed with performance in mind. It utilizes a 64-bit PCI interface and a powerful 233MHz Intel StrongARM SA-110 RISC microprocessor. It also has a dedicated XOR chip, which greatly improves RAID 5 performance. With four Ultra160 SCSI channels, the Adaptec 5400S is capable of attaching up to 60 disk drives. It comes with 128 MByte of ECC SDRAM cache memory, expandable to 256 MByte.

The Adaptec 5400S is the most reliable PCI RAID solution available, with advanced features like PCI hot-plug, hot-spare and hot-swap disk drive support. In addition, the Adaptec 5400S supports RAID levels 0, 1, 0/1, 5, 0/5, and JBOD. A battery back-up module is standard to provide additional fault tolerance.

Flexibility
The Adaptec 5400S also offers Online Capacity Expansion and RAID Level Migration (morphing). Adding capacity and modifying fault tolerance levels provides the ease and flexibility necessary to modify storage systems as businesses grow and needs change. Users can configure multiple arrays per disk drive, each with its own RAID level, stripe size, and file system. Investments in legacy drive technology are protected with the ability to fully utilize the capacity of new, larger disk drives in the same arrays as older, smaller disk drives.
