The race to 1GHz was heated up furiously as AMD and Intel anguished over when would be the right time to pull their triggers. Hearts of the new-tech persuaders were in overdrive with the release of 1GHz processor from Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. Two years later, AMD has definitely become the greatest competitor in the field of central processing units as they achieved 3.9 billion USD in the year of 2001. In the February 2001 edition of the Maximum PC magazine, the preview crew made a prediction: in the first half of year 2002, AMD\'s own interpretation of 64-bit computing would take form in Sledge Hammer (for 4- and 8-way server) and Claw Hammer (for workstations). Here at Hardware Extreme, we will be giving you a kick-ass sneak preview of the 8th-generation processor that AMD is currently developing. One year ago, AMD introduced the first-ever multiprocessor designed for the commercial market. Today, AMD is demonstrating a four-way product that will enable users to exceed the needs of even more enterprise users in the future. With this upcoming product, enterprises will have, for the first time, a choice of x86-based, four to eight-way servers for their critical e-business and database applications. AMD has previously shown single and dual-processor configurations of its eighth-generation processor family, running both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems, including a developmental version of 64-bit Microsoft?Windows? Microsoft Corp. is collaborating with AMD to incorporate 64-bit support for the eighth-generation AMD Athlon and AMD Opteron processors into the Windows operating system. Together, AMD뭩 next-generation processors and Windows are designed to provide customers a flexible, compatible and reliable platform. AMD continues to hit developmental milestones for its next-generation processors, as shown by today뭩 demonstration, and continues to build industry momentum for its upcoming product family. The AMD Opteron processor is designed to scale from one to eight processors with no external logic required. This can aid system designers by reducing the cost and complexity of building servers and workstations. It can also aid customers by reducing cost and increasing server scalability. The modern micro-chips we use today are based on 32 bit technology and so far, the maximum frequency the developers have reached on P4 is \"--are you ready for this?--3.5GHz\" which was demonstrated in the end of last year. The race of frequency seems to be endless, but there is another factor that affects the whole life of a CPU: the x86-64?technology from AMD. At the moment, many top computer engineers from all over the world are gathered in AMD\'s Sunnyvale headquarter to develop the \"Hammer\" series of processors. \"AMD Opteron processors are targeted to the desktop, server and workstation. The performance is very promising to the current needs and we believe that it very competitive to the upcoming Intel Itanium which is based on 64-bit Technology too.\", said Wee Yep Yin, Marketing Manager for South Asia Pacific, AMD Far East LTD. \"AMD\'s x86-64 technology will soon enable the industry to advance software development on all fronts with x86 compatibility, while providing the capability of delivering 64-bit technology benefits.\" AMD Athlon processors based on Hammer technology are expected to ship in the forth quater of 2002. However, like in the case of the 1GHz Athlon, AMD may push for an earlier release date to compete with Intel.
